Education & Training

Sterling Energy offers unique management-training programs, specifically geared to power plant specialists. The PLANT MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE has been created to meet our industry's growing need for professional education at the manager to supervisor level. These training programs are offered several times the year around the country as well as in custom workshops at your site anywhere in the world.

Blend of Business & Technology

For years, we've noticed that the existing management-training options- picking up business books at the airport newsstand, attending MBA courses at the nearby college, sitting through leadership seminars hosted by the Human Resources department, and so on - usually provide only buzzwords, academic fluff, and generic advice. In contrast, the Plant Management Institute supplies hard-hitting ideas and detailed insights specifically focused on managing today's power plant. Our curriculum provides a practical blend of business and technology education for the power plant leaders of today - and tomorrow! Participants learn the nuances of:

  • Managing Machinery, and Leading People
  • Making the Leap from Technical Supervision into Asset Management
  • Staffing Power Plants as Industry Competition Intensifies and Our Workforce Ages
  • Improving Plant Performance Using a Multi-Discipline System Approach
  • Creating a Culture of Committment with Bottom-line Results
  • Understanding Financial Management
  • Understanding and Using Operating Models
  • Analyzing Capital Expenditures

Regulated Utilities & Independent Power Plants

Think of our program as a semester-long business-management course distilled into a four-day workshop. It is built on Sterling Energy's decades of experience both mobilizing new projects, operating plants, and improving the operations of existing plants. It is led by veteran managers with experience in practically every power plant fuel and technology in use today. Our instructor corps includes, but not limited to: Lawrence Straight, Mike Gallagher, Dave Morgan, and Robert Swanekamp. We are particularly pleased to be teaming up with Rob Swanekamp on the next several programs with Rob Swanekamp. He brings to the team not only years of plant-management experience, but a flair for educational success proven in his former work as Editor-in-Chief of Power magazine and in his current work steering the HRSG User's Group.
